What we do
Plan Vietnam's work to help children, their families and communities to break the cycle of poverty covers the following areas:
- Building relationships
- Early childhood care
- Community health
- Quality basic education (primary and secondary)
- Livelihood
- Child protection
Building relationships
Plan's work is supported by thousands of child sponsors. The relationship between a sponsor and the sponsored child is built and strengthened through visits, letters, and updates on project developments and how they are benefiting the child and their community.
This process helps sponsors to understand development issues and commit to the realisation of children's rights.
Through sponsorship communications, children can develop their abilities to express themselves, to think about the community in which they live and share their views with their sponsors.
To date, more than 40,000 children in Vietnam have sponsors, benefitting the children, their families and communities.
Early childhood care and development
This programme aims to take care of the children both at home and in pre-school. The capacity of parents and pre-school teachers to nurture and monitor early child development is enhanced. Read our early childhood care and development case study.
Community health
Our child centred community health programme focuses on improving the quality and accessibility of water supplies and sanitation, and teaches proper hygiene practice. It also improves primary health care and promotes healthy behaviour and awareness, particularly in relation to HIV. Read our health case study.
Quality basic education (primary and lower secondary)
Our school improvement programme helps to improve quality education for children. The programme emphasises child and parent participation in school governance and child-centred teaching and learning. Read our education case study.
Sustainable livelihoods
Plan Vietnam works to strengthen the ability of households to withstand economic shocks and provides for the care and development of children by improving agricultural productivity and food security.
We also create opportunities for disadvantaged youth to develop marketable skills through vocational training. The Livelihood Advancement Business School (LABS) programme has provided 2,766 youths aged 17 to 25 with free vocational training from which 87% have secured full-time employment and a brighter future. Read our Sustainable livelihoods case study.
Child protection
Plan works to sensitise communities to the issue of children's rights abuses, and to mobilise children, their families and communities in support of child protection.
We give particular attention to ensuring basic social services are accessible to street and working children, children with disabilities, children of poor migrant families and children in conflict with the law. Read our Child protection case study.
